What Is a Allurion Gastric Balloon?
The Allurion Balloon is an FDA approved gastric balloon (also known as an intragastric balloon or IGB) made from polyurethane, a material that is much thinner and more flexible than the silicone material in other gastric balloons. The Allurion Balloon is enclosed in a Smart Capsule that is composed of a vegetarian, non-animal derived, degradable material that encloses the balloon.
The balloon occupies space within the stomach, promoting a feeling of fullness and reducing food intake. After approximately 16 weeks, the Allurion Balloon empties through a patented Release Valve and is naturally eliminated.
How Is The Allurion Balloon Procedure Performed?
The Allurion Balloon is placed in the stomach during an outpatient consultation.3 The patient swallows a capsule containing the deflated balloon, which is attached to a thin tube (catheter).
Once the presence of the capsule in the patient’s stomach is confirmed (by X-ray), the balloon is filled with liquid using the catheter.
A second X-ray is performed to ensure that the balloon is properly filled. The procedure is then complete, and the catheter is gently removed. The balloon is designed to self-empty after approximately 4 months and pass naturally.
Who Is A Candidate For The Allurion Gastric Balloon?
The Allurion gastric balloon may be a good option for adults who are overweight or obese and have struggled unsuccessfully to lose weight with diet and exercise alone.
Good candidates for the Allurion balloon:
- Have a body mass index (BMI) of 30 to 40, or sometimes higher, depending on the circumstances.
- Who would like temporary help controlling hunger and portion sizes but do not desire to have surgery.
- Are willing to follow a supervised weight loss program that includes healthier eating habits, regular physical activity, and medical guidance.
- Are ready to make long-term lifestyle changes that will help them maintain their weight loss after the balloon is removed.
Individuals who have previously had stomach surgery, such as gastric bypass or sleeve surgery, usually are not candidates for the Orbera balloon. A doctor will review your medical history and current health to determine if the Orbera balloon makes sense for you.

FAQs
At the end of the treatment period, the Allurion Balloon is designed to automatically open and drain. At this point, the empty Allurion Balloon is designed to pass naturally.
The Smart Capsule is swallowed by the patient to introduce the Allurion Balloon into the stomach. In previously published studies, 99.9% of patients were able to swallow the Capsule.
The filled Allurion Balloon is designed to remain in the stomach for approximately 16 weeks. During the AUDACITY Study, the Balloon remained in the stomach for a little over 15 weeks.
During this time, the Allurion Balloon operates in the same ways as other IGBs to promote satiety and reduce food consumption.
We understand that weight regain after balloon passage is a common fear and source of anxiety. This is why the Allurion Balloon is accompanied by nutritional coaching and medical support to help you change your lifestyle and develop a healthier routine. Once the Allurion Balloon is out of your body, the support from your follow-up team continues until the end of the Allurion Program to help you maintain the same eating habits. The Allurion Smart Capsule can also be repeated.
The Allurion Smart Capsule is a swallowable intragastric balloon that occupies space inside the stomach to help you feel full sooner as part of a supervised program. It does not involve surgery, endoscopy, or anesthesia in typical use, and the balloon is designed to pass naturally after approximately four months. The Smart Capsule is combined with a lifestyle modification program and the Allurion Virtual Care Suite to enable long-term behavior change.
GLP‑1 medications are prescription drugs that act on hormone receptors throughout the body to help control blood sugar and increase feelings of fullness. They are injected or taken orally on an ongoing basis and are approved in the United States for type 2 diabetes and/or chronic weight management when used with diet and increased physical activity.
Previously published studies completed outside of USA have shown that the Allurion Program could be combined with low dose GLP-1s to achieve enhanced outcomes, including resolution of certain diseases related to obesity.
In the first few days after placement, patients may experience nausea or vomiting. In some patients side effects may last up to one to two weeks. Batash Medical will work with you to prescribe medication that will proactively manage these symptoms and help you adjust to the balloon.
Deflation or a leak in a Allurion balloon is very rare, but not impossible. Should the balloon spontaneously deflate, you may no longer feel full after meals. If a patient suspects this may be the case, notify us immediately. A simple abdominal X-ray will determine whether either has occurred, and if necessary, the deflated balloon will be retrieved.
